Preparing and Sending Photos

Preparing and sending photos is an important topic for restoration. We will try to work with any photo but will inform you if we do not feel that we can create a viable restoration. Digital files can be sent by email. The higher the resolution, the better chance we have to restore the photo, but we can sometimes do wonders on very small digital photos.

If you are scanning a photograph to send, please scan at a fairly high resolution. Our preference would be 600 to 1200 dpi. Very small photos may also need an anti-screening setting.

We can also accept photos by mail if you do not have the capacity to scan the photo, though keep in mind that the scanning can be done at many office supply companies and places such as USPS.

Locally in Lubbock, Texas and the surrounding area, we can pick up photos. are you can bring them by, and we can scan them, which is often preferrable.

Once we receive the photos, we can provide an estimate of the cost and time needed for restoration and/or enhancement.

The first image below is an example of screening, usually caused by scanning a very small photo from a printed page, or almost always when scanning newspaper photos. While we can work with this, it’s best to scan the photo using an anti-screening setting, which is available on most scanners. This particular photo was scanned without screening from a college annual dating to about 1910. The actual photo measured less than one inch. The second image is the same photo scanned with anti-screening. It was also scanned darker than normal to pick up facial details. The third image is the finished restoration.
